This is a rare William Gilpin version of the WW2 period “ARPAX” Air Raid Patrol Fire & Rescue Axe.
It was made at Gilpin’s Wedges Mill Forge in Cannock to a design agreed by a House of Commons committee chaired by Sir Winston Churchill.

This was a canvas cover that an officer could put his blanket and pillow inside- this kept it protected from the rain, added an extra layer of warmth and allowed the bed to be rolled up with all the blankets securely inside. The cover is made of tan canvas
