An interesting and increasingly difficult to find 1938 edition of “Der Merker – Jugendjahrbuch des VDA”, published by the Volksbund für das Deutschtum im Ausland (VDA) in Berlin.
Der Merker was produced as a youth yearbook combining the functions of a calendar, school diary, personal record book and educational yearbook. In addition to the calendar sections, it contained articles, photographs and material concerning German history, culture and German communities living abroad.
This example is particularly interesting as it was actually used by a young German student during 1938. The personal information section has been completed, including a date of birth of 3 September 1923, while numerous pages contain handwritten school schedules, notes and other contemporary entries. These personal additions give the book considerably more historical character than an unused example.
The contents include school timetables for Summer 1938 and Winter 1938/39, personal and sporting information, calendar pages and various illustrated articles. Particularly interesting is a section dealing with German schools in Argentina, including the Siegfried School in Quilmes and Germania School in Buenos Aires, reflecting the VDA's strong focus on German communities outside Germany.
A very interesting piece of VDA youth and educational history, combining period printed material with the personal history of its original young owner.
