The ship was the fifth and final battleship of the Deutschland class, built for the Kaiserliche Marine.
Although already obsolete upon commissioning in 1908 due to the advent of dreadnought battleships, it was one of the few large ships Germany was permitted to retain after World War I.
It fired the first shots of World War II during the attack on the Polish Westerplatte base in Danzig on September 1, 1939.
The ship was sunk in 1944.
