Hans-Valentin Hube (1890–1944) was a highly decorated officer of both the First and Second War, a Colonel General, and one of only 27 recipient of the Knight’s Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds. Hube commanded several Panzer units, among them the 16th Panzer Division, the 14th Panzer Corps, and the 1st Panzer Army. He received the Knight’s Cross for his actions during Operation Barbarossa, the Oak Leaves for his role in the Battle of Kiev, the Swords for his leadership during the Russian counter-offensive Operation Uranus, and the Diamonds for organising a successful retreat of forces from Sicily and later the successful breakout of his troops from the Kamenets-Podolsky pocket.
